Sometimes roots need room to grow…or at least a chance to be reborn.
Introducing Café Root Cellar, the reimagined sister spin-off of The Root Cellar Café & Catering.
Café Root Cellar is the product of change – the evolution of a Chapel Hill landmark. Originally planted in Pittsboro in 2018, this second Root Cellar location was barely 2 years into operation when it collided with the forces of a global pandemic. Forced to temporarily close their business, owners Sera Cuni and Susan White saw an opportunity to reconsider their menu and spent months brainstorming for new ideas and creative concepts that would take their Root Cellar love to the next level.
With support and encouragement from family and friends, the couple launched a test kitchen of sorts in October 2020, kicking off a series of “pop-up menus” to gauge customer interest in a variety of cuisines and dishes. The pop-ups were an immediate hit and ultimately served as the incentive the couple needed to reimagine their Pittsboro restaurant.
Bold and flavorful, but by all means, don’t call it fancy!
With Cafe Root Cellar, Chef Sera re-explores American cuisine and showcases the “go big or go home” seasonal dishes she’s always loved to create… and without straying too far from her original roots.
So what can you expect? While we absolutely LOVE the creative sandwiches, soups and salads you can still find in our Chapel Hill location, think of our Pittsboro cafe as the place where food is elevated to new heights. Bold and flavorful but by all means, don’t call it fancy!
